Scintigraphy

Octeroscan with Tektrotyd:

Scintigraphy like somatostatin is a nuclear medicine examination carried out to diagnose certain well-differentiated neuroendocrine tumors and to specify their extension. They are most often located in the alimentary canal or the pancreas, and secrete specific hormones. We carry out an acquisition in SPECT/CT mode, which combines the functional information of the scintigraphy with the morphology of the scanners which increases the specificity of the examination.

TEP-SCAN

FDG PET-SCAN

TEP-SCAN examination by GLUCOSE and FLUOR-18:

The tracer used during the injection is a glucose derivative labelled with a fluorine-18 molecule (18-FDG). This tracer allows the visualization of tumor tissues that capture it intensely. This examination is mainly used to detect cancerous lesions, to search for their possible distant extensions, to control the effectiveness of treatments or to detect possible recurrences. More marginally, it can also be used in certain inflammatory or infectious conditions, without cancerous lesions.

How long does the examination last?

This type of examination lasts at least half a day.

How does the examination take place?

When you arrive at the department, the department’s secretaries will welcome you. Then the radio manipulators will guide you. An infusion is set up and you will be placed on a stretcher in a reserved box. You will be asked to rest, to avoid moving, talking, coughing and reading: your muscles must remain at rest so as not to accumulate the tracer used for the examination. From the moment the tracer is injected into the infusion, you must be patient for 1 hour before the images are taken, which takes less than half an hour.

How to prepare for the examination?

You will receive, after the appointment, a written notice explaining the instructions to be followed.

  • If you are not diabetic, you must fast at least 6 hours before the exam (non-sugar needs are allowed).
  • If you have type 1 diabetes (treated with insulin), inform the secretaries when you make your appointment, a specific schedule is reserved for you. You must eat normally and take your insulin injections as usual.
  • If you have type 2 diabetes (treated with medication), please inform the secretaries when you make your appointment. You must suspend your diet and your oral anti-diabetic drugs at the same time.
And after the exam?

You are advised to drink plenty of fluids in order to quickly eliminate the product that was injected. You will need to see your doctor again to decide what action to take based on the results of the TEP-SCAN.

Is it dangerous?

For other patients, the examination is not dangerous because the radiation levels used are always calculated as accurately as possible for each patient, with a constant concern for radiation protection. Finally, all examinations are integrated into the department's traceability system. The machines are regularly maintained and their proper functioning is checked every day. There are no side effects or allergies.
